It’s one of the funniest terms I’ve heard in this business. “My car got arrested”. Well, YOU may have been arrested but your car was impounded. And now you have a lot of questions. Why? When? How do I get it out? Hopefully this post will help to clear some of that up.
First of all, AM/PM Towing did not impound your car. Your car was impounded by law enforcement. In our case that would mean Flagstaff Police Department, Department of Public Safety, Coconino County Sheriff, or NAU Police Department. AM/PM provides the towing and storage services for the impounding agency. So don’t yell at us.
As to “Why?”, there are any number of reasons. There are two types of impounds: 30-Day and non 30-Day. If you were caught driving on a suspended license, found to be extremely intoxicated, or a repeat offender of DUI your car will likely be on a 30-Day impound. Non 30-Day impounds are done for other offenses. Regardless of the type of impound now you have to deal with it.
Non 30-Day impounds are relatively easy. You will need to come to the AM/PM office. You will need to have a valid, government issued, picture ID. You will need to provide proof of ownership of the vehicle that was impounded. Ownership documents include a current registration or title with your name on it. Proof of insurance is not proof of ownership. If you cannot provide ID AND proof of ownership the vehicle will not be released to you. If the vehicle belongs to someone else we can release it to you if we receive a notarized statement from the owner authorizing AM/PM to do so. Before you ask, the answer is “No”. We cannot simply talk to the owner on the phone to get permission to release a vehicle. After we have all of the documentation that we need it’s simply a matter of paying the towing and storage fees and you are on your way.
For 30-Day impounds it gets a little more involved. In many cases you can get your vehicle out of impound without having to wait 30 days. You will need to go to the law enforcement agency that had the vehcile impounded. You will need to provide a valid driver license, current registration, and proof of insurance. You will also need to pay an administrative fee of $150. Once you have the release, come on down to AM/PM. Provide us with the release documentation and your picture ID, pay your towing and storage fee and be on your way.
That’s it. It’s not that complicated. The only reason it gets complicated is because of you. If you car gets impounded it’s not AM/PM’s fault. It’s yours or the the person that you allowed to drive your car (yell at them not me). If you can’t provide the proper documentation it’s not AM/PM’s fault. It’s yours.
